Project objective

Old strengths, new demands: Time for a user-centered update

BiBox, the Westermann Group’s digital teaching system, is turning 10 and has expanded in terms of features and components over the years. The integration of new features and compliance with the Accessibility Act presented the team with complex challenges—both technical and conceptual. A redesign was the logical next step.

Project objectives:

  • UX improvements
  • Modern, timeless design
  • Scalable user interface
  • Accessibility and readability for all user groups
Redesign

A fresh UI design that engages users—and aligns with the brand

Together with the Westermann team, we developed a new, modern visual identity for the BiBox: new fonts, matching icons, well-thought-out spacing, and colors that align with the brand. This resulted in a cohesive design language that serves as the foundation for the new user interface— a design that evolves with the product, ensuring that the BiBox remains scalable and consistent well into the future.

Project timeline

From kickoff to launch

Kickoff

In the kickoff workshop, target audiences, personas, and pain points were analyzed, and the current situation was assessed.

Wireframes/prototypes

All features and screens of the web application have been redesigned. The basis for this is a clear content and navigation concept that ensures scalability and accessibility.

5-minute tests

Minor UX issues were continuously validated through brief user tests—an efficient and targeted approach.

UX studies

Teachers and students tested the new BiBox in extensive studies. Their feedback was incorporated directly into the product’s further development.

Launch

Even in its beta version, the redesigned BiBox received a lot of positive feedback.

Results & benefits

Efficient collaboration on equal terms

Ongoing collaboration: This project thrived on a lively exchange of ideas among the project owner, editorial team, developers, and UX designers. Weekly meetings, kick-offs for individual projects, and collaboration on Figma files—all to bring together our external ideas and the internal knowledge we’ve accumulated over the years.

From MVP to future ideas: How can we ensure we meet the launch date without sacrificing features? The MVP approach helps: We coordinate the effort with the dev team and break down feature ideas. Our continued development of other features is moved to the backlog.

UI design for AI features: How do AI and schools fit together? How can we foster acceptance from the very beginning? Through interviews, usability tests, and UX concepts, we support the AI product team in developing AI-powered task creation and evaluation.
