How can you easily organize regular usability tests?

Since the various development teams were constantly designing new features for a wide range of product areas, Maxdome had a high demand for testing.

But how can you organize continuous testing when there’s really no time for it—because the next deadline is looming or you don’t want to—or can’t—keep your own employees busy with it all the time? Maxdome decided to outsource usability testing, including the analysis, and enlisted the help of Userlutions for this purpose.

How it works

15 UX tests per year—sometimes from one day to the next

Maxdome designated an internal point of contact who maintained ongoing communication with Userlutions, coordinated testing across teams, and arranged for regular user tests to be conducted on smaller issues. Our UX specialists handled the test guidelines and the evaluation of the tests, while Maxdome’s internal UX teams subsequently identified opportunities for optimization based on the results. This allowed Maxdome to save its own employees’ time while still ensuring that the planned UX improvements were validated by user feedback at every stage.

Thanks to this division of labor, Maxdome was sometimes able to gain valuable insights from one day to the next.

The benefits

Test on a smaller scale and optimize faster

So how exactly has Maxdome benefited from continuous testing? It’s simple:

Continuous testing = testing in Smaller Steps

Each time, the Maxdome tests focused on very small aspects of the product or specific questions (e.g., Which version of the product detail page is easier to navigate?).

For example, the user videos were significantly shorter than those from tests covering the entire user journey. And the smaller the test, the faster the analysis. As a result, the mini-tests could often be conducted and analyzed within a single day.

Continuous testing = faster optimization

Imagine you’re shooting at your website or app with a shotgun. This creates dozens of holes, big and small, and now you have to decide which ones to fix first. That’s what it’s like with user test results. With continuous testing, on the other hand, only 3–4 small holes are uncovered at a time, and fixing them is much faster and easier. The smaller the test, the more focused the optimization effort.

The result

Faster product development, less workload for employees, and satisfied users

Thanks to the close collaboration between Maxdome and Userlutions, regular testing was seamlessly integrated into Maxdome’s processes, and user feedback became an integral part of their product development. By reviewing and adjusting newly designed features in a very short time, they managed to conduct an impressive 15 UX tests in just one year, with an average project duration of just 2–4 days!

As you can see, incorporating regular user testing is easier than you might think!

Maxdome’s example shows how easily continuous testing can be integrated into a company’s ongoing sprints. By testing regularly, Maxdome was able to conduct smaller, more streamlined, and more cost-effective tests and avoid major changes to the product later on.
